"Geothermal: Heating System or Energy Source?"
Geothermal Energy, like many renewable technologies, is plauged with common misconceptions and confusion. In most cases, this is the result of consumers not fully understanding what they're buying and how they're buying it.
Most consumers understand a heating system as a furnace that uses an energy source like oil or propane to heat their home. A geothermal system is more than a heating system, it's also a renewable energy source, buried underground in the backyard that saves money from day one. With oil and propane, consumers pay monthly for their consumption. A fuel provider would never offer 25 years worth of oil or propane in advance, nor would anyone want to pay for it up front. Likewise, with geothermal energy, it would make sense to pay it monthly rather than in advance. This is now easier than ever using available geothermal financing options.
"The real difference between paying monthly for conventional energy as apposed to paying monthly for geothermal energy is that with geothermal, somsumers are getting much more with their monthly payment," explains Barry Kowacz, President of Geo Dynamics NextEnergy. "Paying for a monthly oil or propane bill gives comsumers nothing more than heat as a by-product of burning a fossil fuel and sending toxic smoke up the chimney. When paying monthly for a geothermal system, consumers get their own renewable energy source to provide heating, cooling and hot water for their home. Geothermal is a non-depreciating investment in the home and has a positive impact on the enviroment."
Geothermal provides comsumers with positive cash flow from day one. Monthly cas flow allows consumers to use this extra money to pay down their mortgage, reduce costly credit card debt or save more money for retirement.
"Let me provide a practical example," Kowacz continues. "When someone switches to one of our geothermal systems fromheating with oil, propane or electric resistance, the combined finance cost and operating cost of their NextEnergy system is often less per month than their old fuel bill alone. In other words, you can upgrade to a brand new NextEnergy geothermal system is often less per month than their old fuel bill alone. In other words, you can upgrade to a brand new NextEnergy geothermal system with several added benefits and actually have more money left over at the end of the month."
A fossil fuel bill is like a life-long lease payment where the rates just continue to rise. Monthly payments for a geothermal system are paid to the bank in the form of a loan. This means there's a light at the end of the tunnel knowing that eventually, the loan payments will end.
A major benefit of geothermal is the non-depreciating value it ads to the home. Unlike many investments homeowners make, a geothermal system will appreciate the home's value as conventional engery costs rise. When the time comes to sell, showing potential buyers the low monthly operating cost of geothermal can increase the perceived value of the home by approximately $10,000 - $15,000. Most home improvements either have a life cycle or will eventually go out of style. The geothermal energy source buried in the backyard will last longer than the home and free energy never goes out of style.
Instead of paying a fuel company for an energy source that comes from thousands of miles away, why not harness a renewable energy source already stored in the backyard.
"Going Green in the County"
(Picton, Ont.) - When Barry Kowacz installed his first Geothermal system in the late 80's he knew that this would be the way of the future.Over the years he has watched the trend toward green and sustainable energy explode, and with it, interest in Geothermal continuing to grow. Now, more than 20 years later he has launched Geo Dynamics NextEnergy, a company dealing exclusively in Geothermal.
Geo Dynamics NextEnergy is a new company born out of Clapp & Jackson Plumbing and Heating Ltd., a business that has faithfully served the Picton and surrounding areas since 1948.The rapidly growing interest in Geothermal heating and cooling systems is what spurred Kowacz to create Geo Dynamics NextEnergy as a separate entity.
"Geothermal systems are becoming more and more popular," says kowacz."Your heating system is no longer looked at as a furnace that youhide in the closet.People now want to show off their systems and show that they are doing their part for the enviroment." Evidence of this was validated when Kowacz previous company Clapp & Jackson was featured in the Jan-Feb 2010 Holmes on Holmes magazine for a system the installed in Prince Edward County.
NextEnergyGeothermal system us the energy of the sun, stored in the earth, to heat and cool your home.In the winter, a series of pipes buried in the ground absorb the heat from the earth and circulate it through your house. In the summer, the process works in reverse, taking the warmth from the house, and cooling it underground. As an alternative energy source, Geothermal is self-sustaining, efficient and environmentally friendly, and because it doesn't rely at all on fossil fuels, it is also cost-effective.
"By combining the natural energy source stored in the earth with the high efficient NextEnergy Geothermal heat pump, consumers can realize savings upwards of 70% on their homes heating and cooling bills," says Jim Hill of NextEnergy, the sole supplier of these systems for Geo Dynamics.
"We value our tie with NextEnergy because they are always on the leading edge of technology," says Kowacz. He believes that Geothermal heating and cooling is going to become the norm over the next decade, and currently installs the stystem in new homes and upgrades existing homes to Geothermal.
He Says for the average two-storey home the process to convert to Geothermal takes about two days. The cost-savings in the long-run mean means the system essentially pays for itself, especially when considering the current cost of fossil fuels.
For that reason he's seen a big shift in the last few years toward commercial and industrial clients looking to install Geothermal systems as well.He is anticipating a continued growth commercially as the trend continues to shift toward green-business.
"People are now thinking in terms of what the world is going to look like for their children and grandchildren," says Kowacz."They want to be sure that they are doing their part to make the planet a better place."
